We are looking for an experienced and motivated High Voltage Commissioning Engineer to join our team in Scotland. The successful candidate will play a key role in the testing, commissioning and energisation of high-voltage electrical systems, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.
As a High Voltage Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for the commissioning and testing of HV electrical systems and associated equipment across a range of projects.
You will work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, construction teams, clients and subcontractors to ensure that systems are correctly installed, tested, commissioned and handed over in accordance with project requirements and applicable UK standards.
Plan and carry out HV commissioning and testing activities in accordance with approved procedures and project requirements.
Commission and test HV switchgear, transformers, protection systems, cables, substations and associated equipment.
Carry out electrical testing, functional testing and pre-commissioning activities.
Perform insulation resistance, continuity, earth resistance and other electrical tests as required.
Test and verify protection and control systems, including protection relay settings and trip functionality.
Review electrical drawings, schematics, single-line diagrams and technical documentation.
Identify, investigate and resolve commissioning issues and technical defects.
Prepare commissioning plans, test procedures, inspection records and commissioning documentation.
Produce accurate test results, reports and handover documentation.
Support HV switching, energisation and de-energisation activities in accordance with approved procedures.
Work in accordance with site-specific safety rules, RAMS, permits and switching procedures.
Liaise with clients, DNOs/IDNOs, contractors and other stakeholders as required.
Provide technical support to site teams during installation, testing and commissioning.
Ensure all commissioning activities comply with relevant UK legislation, standards and industry best practice.
Participate in site meetings, progress reviews and commissioning planning.
Support final system handover and close-out of commissioning documentation.
Proven experience as a High Voltage Commissioning Engineer or similar electrical commissioning role.
Strong practical experience with HV electrical systems and equipment.
Experience testing and commissioning HV switchgear, transformers, protection systems and associated equipment.
Good understanding of electrical protection and control systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and single-line diagrams.
Experience working safely around HV equipment and electrical systems.
Strong understanding of electrical testing and commissioning procedures.
Good knowledge of UK electrical safety requirements and industry standards.
Ability to produce clear and accurate technical reports and commissioning records.
Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a project team.
Willingness to travel and work on project sites across Scotland and, where required, elsewhere in the UK.
Full UK driving licence.
HNC/HND or degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
HV Authorisation / Senior Authorised Person (SAP) experience.
Experience working with DNOs, IDNOs, utilities or major infrastructure clients.
Experience with HV substations and grid connection projects.
Experience with protection relay testing and commissioning.
Experience using secondary injection test equipment.
Experience with primary injection testing.
Experience with transformer testing.
Experience with HV cable testing and commissioning.
Inspection & Testing / electrical testing qualifications.
Experience working under client-specific HV safety rules.
CSCS/ECS or relevant site certification.
SSSTS/SMSTS or equivalent site safety qualification.
