High Voltage Substation Protection & Control Design Engineer – REDAS Engineering & Construction
REDAS Engineering & Construction is a growing engineering and construction company delivering specialist electrical engineering, construction, commissioning and infrastructure solutions across the UK.
We are seeking an experienced High Voltage Substation Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Scotland.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of protection, control, automation and associated electrical systems for HV substations and grid connection projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to contribute to major energy infrastructure projects and play a key role from concept and detailed design through to construction, commissioning and handover.
As a High Voltage Substation P&C Design Engineer, you will develop detailed protection and control designs for HV substations, ensuring that designs are technically compliant, safe, buildable and delivered in accordance with client and project requirements.
You will work closely with electrical engineers, protection engineers, commissioning engineers, project managers, construction teams, clients, DNOs/IDNOs and equipment manufacturers.
Develop detailed protection and control designs for HV substations and associated electrical infrastructure.
Produce and review protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams and circuit diagrams.
Develop single-line diagrams, functional diagrams and protection philosophy documentation.
Design protection, control, interlocking, metering and automation systems.
Develop protection and control panel designs, including wiring and termination arrangements.
Produce cable schedules, termination schedules, I/O schedules and equipment lists.
Develop and review AC/DC auxiliary system designs associated with substation P&C systems.
Design and specify protection and control equipment, including protection relays, RTUs, BCUs, PLCs and associated equipment.
Develop protection and control logic diagrams and functional specifications.
Review protection relay settings and coordinate with protection engineers where required.
Design interfaces between protection, control, SCADA, telecommunications and substation equipment.
Develop and review SCADA and RTU I/O schedules and control philosophies.
Ensure appropriate interlocking and operational control schemes are incorporated into designs.
Produce detailed engineering documentation suitable for construction and commissioning.
Review manufacturers' drawings, technical specifications and equipment documentation.
Carry out design reviews, checking and verification in accordance with company procedures.
Support design risk assessments and identify potential technical and constructability issues.
Liaise with clients, DNOs, IDNOs, equipment suppliers and other project stakeholders.
Provide engineering support to site teams during construction and commissioning.
Support commissioning engineers with clarification of drawings, protection schemes and control functionality.
Review red-line drawings and incorporate as-built information into final documentation.
Ensure designs comply with relevant UK legislation, standards, client specifications and industry best practice.
Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates and design processes.
The successful candidate should have experience working with some or all of the following:
HV and EHV substations.
11kV, 33kV, 66kV, 132kV and/or higher-voltage systems.
HV circuit breakers and disconnectors.
Power transformers and transformer protection.
Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs).
Busbar protection.
Feeder protection.
Transformer differential and restricted earth fault protection.
Overcurrent and earth fault protection.
Distance protection.
Under/over-voltage and under/over-frequency protection.
Auto-reclose schemes.
Intertripping and teleprotection schemes.
Bus-section and bus-coupler control.
Circuit breaker failure protection.
Synchronising and synch-check schemes.
Station control systems.
RTUs, PLCs and Bay Control Units.
SCADA and remote control systems.
DC battery and charger systems.
AC auxiliary supplies.
Protection and control panels.
Metering and monitoring systems.
Substation communications and network interfaces.

Technical specifications and equipment datasheets.
Design calculations where applicable.

As-built documentation.
Proven experience as a Protection & Control Design Engineer, Substation Design Engineer or equivalent.
Strong experience in HV substation protection and control design.
Good understanding of HV protection principles and electrical power systems.
Experience producing and reviewing detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
Strong ability to interpret single-line diagrams and protection philosophies.
Experience with protection relays and protection/control systems.
Understanding of CT/VT circuits and protection measurement requirements.
Understanding of HV substation control and interlocking schemes.
Experience designing or reviewing AC/DC auxiliary systems.
Good understanding of SCADA, RTU and substation automation interfaces.
Experience producing cable schedules, termination schedules and I/O schedules.
Strong understanding of electrical engineering standards and design practices.
Excellent attention to detail and engineering documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and manage design deliverables to project deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively with clients, suppliers, engineers and site teams.
Willingness to travel to project sites across Scotland and elsewhere in the UK when required.
HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Chartered Engineer or working towards professional registration.
Experience with UK DNO/IDNO specifications and requirements.
Previous experience working on National Grid or DNO substation projects.
Experience with 132kV substation projects.
Experience with renewable energy grid connections.
Experience with wind farm, solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) grid connections.
Experience with IEC 61850-based substation automation systems.
Experience with protection relay configuration and testing.
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD or similar design software.
Experience with engineering/document management systems.
Knowledge of relevant IEC/BS EN standards and Energy Networks Association (ENA) requirements.
Experience supporting HV commissioning and site testing activities.
A strong understanding of applicable standards and industry requirements is expected, including relevant:
IEC standards.
BS EN standards.
ENA Engineering Recommendations.
DNO/IDNO technical specifications.
National Grid technical requirements where applicable.
Client-specific engineering standards and specifications.
UK electrical safety and design requirements.
