Secondary & LV Design Engineer – REDAS Engineering & Construction
REDAS Engineering & Construction is a growing engineering and construction company delivering specialist electrical engineering, construction, commissioning and infrastructure solutions across the UK.
We are seeking an experienced Secondary & LV Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Scotland. The successful candidate will be responsible for the detailed design of secondary electrical systems, low-voltage systems, auxiliary supplies, control and protection interfaces, cabling and associated equipment for HV substations and electrical infrastructure projects.
This role offers the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to construction, commissioning and final handover.
As a Secondary & LV Design Engineer, you will develop detailed engineering designs for substation secondary systems and LV electrical infrastructure.
You will work closely with primary design engineers, protection and control engineers, project managers, commissioning engineers, construction teams, clients, DNOs/IDNOs and equipment manufacturers to ensure designs are technically sound, coordinated and suitable for construction and commissioning.
Develop detailed secondary and LV electrical designs for HV substations and associated electrical infrastructure.
Produce and review LV schematics, wiring diagrams, circuit diagrams and electrical drawings.
Design LV AC and DC auxiliary systems for substations and electrical installations.
Develop auxiliary supply arrangements for protection, control, switchgear, transformers and other substation equipment.
Design battery, charger and DC distribution systems.
Design LV distribution boards, AC auxiliary boards and associated equipment.
Produce cable schedules, core schedules, termination schedules and equipment schedules.
Develop control, indication, alarm and interface circuits.
Design interfaces between primary equipment and secondary/control systems.
Produce and review marshalling and interface arrangements.
Develop terminal plans and termination drawings.
Produce LV distribution and auxiliary system single-line diagrams.
Undertake cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations and other relevant electrical calculations.
Carry out load assessments for AC and DC auxiliary systems.
Develop and review protection and control interfaces.
Coordinate LV and secondary designs with primary substation equipment and civil/structural requirements.
Review manufacturers' drawings, technical specifications and equipment documentation.
Produce detailed engineering documentation suitable for construction and commissioning.
Support the preparation of technical specifications and equipment datasheets.
Participate in design reviews and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
Identify design risks, technical issues and constructability concerns.
Provide engineering support to construction and commissioning teams.
Attend site when required to resolve design and installation issues.
Review red-line drawings and incorporate as-built information into final documentation.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable UK standards, client requirements and project specifications.

Core schedules.
Termination schedules.
Equipment schedules.
I/O schedules.
Battery and charger calculations.
AC/DC load schedules.
Cable sizing calculations.
Voltage-drop calculations.
Short-circuit calculations where applicable.
Panel general arrangement drawings.
Panel wiring drawings.
LV distribution board schedules.
Technical specifications.

Construction issue drawings.
As-built documentation.
Proven experience as a Secondary Design Engineer, LV Design Engineer, Electrical Design Engineer or similar role.
Experience working on HV substations or electrical infrastructure projects.
Strong understanding of LV electrical systems and auxiliary supplies.
Experience designing AC and DC auxiliary systems.
Experience producing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and circuit diagrams.
Good understanding of protection, control and secondary systems.
Experience with cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations and electrical load assessments.
Ability to interpret and develop electrical single-line diagrams.
Experience with LV switchboards, distribution boards, battery systems and chargers.
Good understanding of control, indication, alarm and interlocking circuits.
Experience preparing cable, termination and equipment schedules.
Ability to read and interpret HV substation drawings and equipment documentation.
Strong understanding of UK electrical design standards and requirements.
Excellent attention to detail.
Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Willingness to travel to project sites across Scotland and elsewhere in the UK when required.
HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Chartered Engineer or working towards professional registration.
Previous experience with UK DNO/IDNO projects.
Experience working on 11kV, 33kV and 132kV substations.
Experience with renewable energy grid connection projects.
Experience with wind, solar PV and battery energy storage projects.
Experience with National Grid or DNO specifications.
Knowledge of ENA Engineering Recommendations.
Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent design software.
Experience with engineering document management systems.
Experience with LV switchgear and panel design.
Experience with UPS and essential/standby power systems.
Experience with substation control and automation systems.
Knowledge of IEC/BS EN standards applicable to LV and secondary systems.
